Petitte vs Wakefield

Plate umpire Jim Reynolds called Petitte's 1st inning 3-1 pitch to #3 batter "Big Papi" Ortiz a ball, though Sterling says it had the plate and was belt high. Hmm, this after Petitte struck out Ellsbury and Pedroia. On review of the video Waldman said it was off the plate by 3" and sets the boundaries for the strike zone. Next batter Kevin Youkilis -- batting in Manny's former slot -- walked, too. Let's see how tonight goes....

(For the sake of narrative satisfaction I should add that Bay popped out.)

At the very top of the 2nd -- with the score at 1-0 courtesy of Damon's HR off his former-countryman Wakefield -- Sterling noted that Petitte's 2-1 pitch was called a ball in a rather tight zone against Lowrie. (By the way, neither Sterling nor Waldman saw Reynolds call the final strike against A-Rod at the bottom of the 1st.) And now, for the second straight inning, here's another 2-on, 2-out situation for Pettite, who had shut down the first 2 at-bats in the inning before letting 2 swinging bunts from the bottom of Boston's line-up get on base and the first - Bailey - score on Ellsbury's subsequent single. Score: 1-1....

___________________________________________________

As the Yankees were going ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the 2nd, a quietly enchanting astronaut who had phoned Sterling from the Space Station was that rarest of persopnages, a perfect guest, so engaging, and speaking in thoughts that seemed too natural to be timed to fit between the pitches Sterling had to call, but they did. I dislike having my game interrupted by guests who come on during games, and thankfully Sterling and Waldman welcome few. But this gentleman, who threw out tonight's first pitch, was a pleasure.

__________________________________________________

Note: Top of the 4th (3-2 Boston): As Girardi and Petitte confer on the mound, Sterling conjectures that they are discussing Petitte's strike zone being squeezed by Reynolds. Sure enough, next they invite Reynolds to the mound, where, as Sterling tells it, Girardi is taking care not to get thrown out for arguing balls and strikes, speaking loudly but facing no one in particular. After the confab, Petitte strikes out the batter and speaks to the umpire on his way off the field. Sterling was right on top of this from the 1st.

Note: Top of the 5th (3-2 Boston): Sterling observes that 1st base umpire FIelding Culbreth missed Giambi's tag-out (of Crisp?), putting-on an extra Boston runner. Subsequently, Bailey wasn't called for interfering with catcher Molina on the basepath, and Sterling asks if Waldman or Feinsand recalls which umpire called that very out against the Yankees at which park on their recent road trip. Nada. After reviewing a play at 3rd on video between innings, Sterling discovered that A-Rod's tag beat another runner's [Lowrie's?] slide.

So, what would the score be at the end the 5th if accurate calls were being made? Not 6-2 Yanks, even discounting any squeezing of Petitte's strike zone by Reynolds.

Top of the 6th (6-3 Boston): Here we go again. Molina thought Bruney's last pitch to Pedroia was a strike, and Girardi comes out to talk to Reynolds again. No reversal. Waldman, mentioning a talk she'd once had with Mussina, speculates that the concern is that Reynolds is not being consistent on his calls on the same pitch. (Mussina had told Waldman that pitchers can get used to a unique strike zone as long as the umpire is consistent.) Bruney walks 3 men in a row. (7-3 Boston)

6 walks by Yankee pitching in 6 innings.

The calling of Yankee pitches is very much an issue in this game, as are at least 2 safe calls, made at 1st and 3rd.

You may not know who she was. If you are lucky, you had your own Malaika, and you know exactly what I mean by that.

She died today, January 14, 2008, and this is where I write about people who matter to me who die. She had a Brooklyn Dodgers jersey with Holman-Bermiss across the back and the number 42. And she had cancer.

Barrington unlocked the door to her office so I could drape the jersey over her chair as if she had just left it there overnight. I didn't want her to know whom it came from, but Floraine - who is Frick to my Frack in Malaika's book, couldn't keep the secret (though MHB would have figured it out anyway, me being from LA, our school being in Brooklyn) because - it was sweet - she really wanted Malaika to know that it came from me because of how much I loved her and how hard it was to find a company that allowed enough room for all the letters on the back: H-O-L-M-A-N--B-E-R-M-I-S-S. Her father's last name, Holman, had to be on there because she hyphenated, and especially because she and her father used to follow the Dodgers from Flatbush, Brooklyn, where her school was until just before she retired, and where her dad still lives with her family. And, in fact, a year or so later, she asked me where I'd had the jersey made because her father had discovered hers, she said possessively, and he needed his own.

And you know, she let me have my secret after all, in her way. She slowed down
into one of those rapid
slip-slip-slip-I'm-about-to-stop-for-about-half-a-second skips on her
way down the hall and said something to me in that
this-is-for-only-you-to-hear voice that was probably closer to a mutter than
a whisper. Barely stopping, she came close enough for only me to hear "See you
in the Series, Yankee."

Malaika Holman-Bermiss was Principal of The Brooklyn Comprehensive Night High School for almost all of our near-20-year history. She retired in 2005. Her Assistant Principal Catherine Paparelli is Principal. The school will be closing June of 2008, this year.

It seems like one could not exist without the other. Or maybe it is time for the rest of us to step up now. Or both.

"Pitchers and Catchers" is coming. Let us not drop the ball just because she's not here to tell us when to show up.

More memories are to come, as ever.

PLEASE SHARE YOUR OWN MEMORIES OF MALAIKA. You are welcome to use the comment space below - there is a very brief registration - or - and this would be great - you can leave a memory on the BCNHS Homepage in the MEMOIRS section. Just scroll down on the right. You'll see it.

More evidence that Red Sox play dirty. Gagne's already <del>traded</del> gone. What about Varitek?

About
Clemens, I never wanted him and I didn't want him back. The audience at
last season's Pinstripes on the Park was less than enthusiastic when he
made his first post-re-signing appearance. His cheerleading then and
after was seductive, but it rang a little sad.

As Clemens once called David Wells, we may now call him, Eli. (Remember the **** everyone gave Wells for spilling any beans about steroids in his book, which came out before Canseco's?)

No surprise about Petitte. They were inseparable.

By
the way, the Yanks fired their personal trainer, McNamee, whom Clemens
brought over from Toronto, in 2001. He is their alleged supplier, and I
believe Clemens continued to see him.

That was a public
statement of the Yanks' approach to anything suspicious. And it's
suspicious that there are so many Yankees on the list. Then again,
would we expect less of conclusions drawn by the <del>Chairman</del> Director of the Red
Sox Board? However, I must admit, a brief bio hunt turned up nothing
unpraiseworthy, let alone compromising, about Mitchell except his team
position in the Red Sox organization, and the fact that he did not
recuse himself from the commission immediately. He should never have
accepted a role that in itself demonstrates his conflict of interest.

Giambi
and Sheffield were open (Sheffield used a topical formula as I recall).
But I hope they didn't inform. If they had to, so be it. Giambi was
summoned more than once, and he is a friend of Wells!

But we
must remember overall that most "evidence" in the Mitchell paper is
from informants, as I understand it. Informants are criminals caught
red handed, and they have every reason to "cooperate." How much more do
we trust their information than the word of the waterboarded?

Finally,
why were the results of the contractually-anonymous drug tests made
available to the committee? (or, am I confusing this committee with
another?) Although the results were not used as evidence in the report,
it should not have been available as I understand the contract. Is this
another execution of self-righteous union-busting?

You've let Brian do his thing.

Look how much we are paying Clemens for a partial season with one or 2 partial starts himself.
